Fitness creator return on investment without health outcomes in the numerator

Calculate fitness creator return cautiously by defining contribution and economic cost, separating attribution from causality and excluding health claims.

Fitness creators return on investment should use incremental contribution, not gross revenue, views or claimed health improvement. If the method cannot estimate what would have happened without the activity, publish cost and attribution separately rather than calling the ratio causal ROI.

This framework was checked on 5 September 2026. It supplies no expected return, health effect or personal financial advice. A named accountant, evaluator, statistician, advertising reviewer and registered health professional must approve the relevant definitions.

What to take away

  • Use incremental contribution, not gross revenue, views or claimed health improvement, for fitness creator ROI.
  • Classify evidence as observed, attributed or incremental; these levels are not interchangeable.
  • Keep health outcomes outside the commercial numerator; a positive ratio does not substantiate public health claims.
  • Report observed income, attributed contribution, total cost and causal estimate on separate lines.
  • If reviewers cannot defend the causal step, stop at attribution rather than inventing an incremental percentage.

Classify the evidence first

Observed means the business recorded an event. Attributed means a rule assigned that event to content or a channel. Incremental means the evidence estimates the difference caused by the activity. These levels are not interchangeable.

A platform may report a purchase after a click. The buyer could have arrived through another route or bought without the content. HM Treasury's 2026 Magenta Book explains that experimental and quasi-experimental impact methods use a counterfactual. Its quality guidance warns that causality can rarely be attributed confidently without a strong matched or randomised comparison group.

Define contribution before ROI

Start with settled GBP income for the defined products and period. Subtract refunds and the variable fulfilment, platform, payment and partner costs included under the business's documented contribution rule. Do not mix tax treatment with an informal dashboard formula.

HMRC's VAT reclaim guidance explains that recovery depends on registration, business use, evidence and other restrictions. A tax reviewer must decide whether VAT remains in the cost measure.

Complete the calculation card

Use ROI = (incremental contribution - total economic cost) / total economic cost only after the evidence supports both quantities.

The calculation produces a dimensionless ratio for that one period. It is not a forecast or a benchmark for fitness creators in England.

Keep health outcomes outside the commercial numerator

Views, completion, comments and testimonials cannot demonstrate improved strength, reduced pain or safer exercise. NICE's behaviour-change guidance recommends planning objectives and evaluation before an intervention and using valid, reliable measures where available. The document concerns behaviour-change interventions; a health professional and evaluator must decide the suitable method for a creator programme.

CAP Code Section 12 requires evidence for objective health advertising claims. A positive internal ratio does not substantiate public claims about efficacy or safety.

Report what the design can support

Where a suitable holdout, phased introduction or other qualified design is possible, pre-register the outcome, comparison, sample, period, exclusions and analysis. Test contamination and rival explanations. If that design is disproportionate, provide a contribution account with uncertainty, but do not invent an incremental percentage.

Show observed income, attributed contribution, total cost and the causal estimate on separate lines. Publish a range when assumptions materially alter the result. If reviewers cannot defend the causal step, stop at attribution. Restraint is more accurate than a polished ROI number built from unrelated dashboard events.

Before you act

  • Define contribution before calculating ROI.
  • Complete the calculation card with all required inclusions and exclusions.
  • Ensure a named accountant, evaluator, statistician, advertising reviewer and health professional approve definitions.
  • Keep health outcomes outside the commercial numerator.
  • Report observed income, attributed contribution, total cost and causal estimate separately.
  • Stop at attribution if the causal step cannot be defended.

Common questions

What is the difference between observed, attributed and incremental evidence?

Observed means the business recorded an event. Attributed means a rule assigned that event to content or a channel. Incremental means the evidence estimates the difference caused by the activity. These levels are not interchangeable, so you must classify evidence before calculating ROI.

Why should health outcomes be kept out of the commercial numerator?

Views, completion, comments and testimonials cannot demonstrate improved strength, reduced pain or safer exercise. CAP Code Section 12 requires evidence for objective health advertising claims. A positive internal ratio does not substantiate public claims about efficacy or safety, so health outcomes must remain separate.

What should you do if you cannot estimate a counterfactual?

If the method cannot estimate what would have happened without the activity, publish cost and attribution separately rather than calling the ratio causal ROI. Provide a contribution account with uncertainty, but do not invent an incremental percentage. Stop at attribution if reviewers cannot defend the causal step.
